Importance of Award/Reward

The School team in Manauri had organised a Fancy Dress Competition on Children's day last year...all the tiny toddlers were dressed in colourful out fits...with some or the other theme..most of the kids won lot of prizes..except my students...prior to this event..I had packed some gifts at home for all the participants from my class....after the competition..we all gathered in the class room..and I asked everybody to clap for themselves..i too joined hands with them..
some of the kids felt bad as they dint get any prizes...I hugged them and told them that they had done a wonderful job..and I was proud of them...they all smiled..and suddenly I opened the bag of gifts in front of them..and distributed amongst all of them..they were simply thrilled..I can still visualise that scene...
They were very happy..they started dancing..and came to me..hugged me..kissed me..and thanked me...I can never forget those sparkling eyes..full of love and affection..and above all their happiness....rest of the kids who were hesitant earlier to participate..came forward and told me that they would like to go to the stage and perform in front of everybody present there...for the first time I saw that there was no stage fright..and no hesitation at all...
In a way those small gifts had motivated the kids to participate in all the competitions later...which made the parents feel proud and content...!!!And the school was proud to get some of impressive young perfomers in all the fields..!!

Varsha Ramachandran,4yrs,Digaru,Assam

My father was posted in a small and a remote area called Digaru (which is about 30 Kms from Guwahati) way back in 2001....I was the class teacher in a Play School there..and had about 20 tiny toddlers of aged 2 1/2 yrs.
Varsha was little grown up comapared to rest of the kids...she was a adopted kid of her parents..and one of the notorious kids among the whole lot.she used to hit all the kids with sticks,shoes,stones...she used to break something or the other every day in the class, she used to spit on everybody's face, used to speak all kinds of abusive words all the time..everywhere she used to go she used to break plates..and used to throw spoons and forks at people..people used to get annoyed of all these activities...her parents used to come to me help lessly....I used to scold her.(as i never wanted to hurt her physically).but it never made any difference.....
One day we all were outside in the garden and playing with ball and swings..when suddenly i heard one child crying loudly..i turned back..and to my horror found that a kid was under the sea saw..and varsha was sitting on top..trying to push hard....that kid was crying in pain..i went and pulled varsha and pulled that other kid and took him to the first aid room...
since i had tried almost everything with her..starting from scolding..and threatening...she never took anything seriously....now what I did was..i took a piece of cello tape..and put it on her lips...and tied her hands with some bandage ..now she was able to move her hands...but wasnt able to play.I took her with me to the class..and gave toys to everybody to play..she felt miserable as she wasnt able to play..but sat and witnessed everybody else's expressions of joy/happiness...
after a while i opened the tape...and removed the bandage....and asked her how she felt....she cried and said sorry to everyone present there.....she came to me and said.."mam all these kids are my friends and i promise i will never hurt them..she went and kissed and hugged all of them...i was absolutely speech less that day
after that incident nobody ever heard any kind of complaints against her...what her parents were not able to do may be my one of my harsh steps had definately changed her for good!!!

Anirudh Roy, 5yrs,Allahabad

I used to teach in UKG class in Air Force School Manauri those days,Manauri is a small town next to the "city of sangam" i.e Allahabad.....
Manauri is not a advanced city like Allahabad so the nearest decent school for the local and Air Force kids was this school...
Anirudh used to be one of the good students of the class..but a very naughty child...
One day while i just went to speak to one of my colleagues...all the students started playing outside the class..and while they were playing they noticed a stray dog next to our class room, the dog was lying down liesurely next to a broekn piece of furniture..
most of the kids were quite scared of the animal so they came running to the class room..but Anirudh took some stones and started throwing at the creature..the dog got furious and was about to bite this kid..when one of my colleagues came and dragged the kid back..and called me and informed me about what had happened....
I felt really bad as i wasnt there when this thing took place..and it took place in a very short span of time..there wasnt time to react...
well i came back to the class..and told all the students that it was very unfair on thier part to torture a animal like that..and i explained them that we shoudnt hurt anybody just because we are superior to that particular living being...and about Anirudh...i asked the whole class to avoid talking to him..and I statred playing with all the students..and we had lot of fun in front of him..making him feel guilty...for what he had done....
after sometime..he went outside where the dog was still lying..and what i witnessed there.i can never express my feelings for that...
Anirudh was holding his ears and said...."sorry doggy i'll never hit you again,my mam has told me that we should love everybody"!!!
I was in tears..look at that child...how quickly and innocently he apologised in front of the animal...and then he came back..and informed me..that he had said sorry..and asked me.."mam can I sit on your lap..as i normally do..I hope you are not angry with me anymore...i hugged him tightly..and felt proud.
Anirudh made me feel proud of the fact that whatever i taught my students he actually implemented it in real life that too at a tender age of 5yrs....!!
